Ohio Valley Center's Advisory Council celebrates its 20th anniversary

Ohio Valley Center's Advisory Council celebrated its 20th anniversary this past April in Columbus, Ohio. First convened in April of 1993, the Advisory Council was created when the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at OSU was awarded one of six regional brain injury center grants from the U.S. Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration. The core of the infrastructure of Ohio Valley Center (OVC) is the 35-member Advisory Council composed of various stakeholders in the research we conduct. The OVC Advisory Council prioritizes issues facing persons with TBI, reviews opportunities for funding, participates in project implementation, monitors progress on projects, and evaluates outcomes. Dr. John Corrigan elected to lead the Project Directors of the federally funded TBI Model Systems Program

John D. Corrigan, PhD, will Chair the TBI Model Systems Executive Committee, a position which includes representing the centers' concerns to the public, elected officials, NIDRR and other federal programs concerned with the long-term effects of TBI. Corrigan was elected by his fellow Project Directors during their December 13-14 meeting in Washington DC. Corrigan chaired the Executive Committee in the previous 5-year cycle, as well. $2.2M Awarded to Ohio State University for Traumatic Brain Injury Research

The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center was awarded a five-year, $2,237,500 grant by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to study the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Ohio State’s “Ohio Regional TBI Model System” was one of 16 centers nationally that were funded to continue examine the initial recovery and lifelong changes that result from TBI. Dr. Jennifer Bogner inducted as a Fellow in the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine

Dr. Jennifer Bogner, co-Principal Investigator for the Ohio Regional TBI Model System and Vice-Chair of Research and Academic Affairs for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Ohio State University, has been inducted as a Fellow in the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. ACRM is the world's leading interdisciplinary rehabilitation research organization. The Fellow of ACRM designation recognizes "...individuals who make significant contributions to the field of rehabilitation and to ACRM, have an outstanding record of professional service, and have a sustained record of contributions of national significance to medical rehabilitation in the areas of clinical practice, research, education, and/or administration." OVC Reaches Significant Milestone as a TBI Model System

Staff at the Ohio Valley Center (OVC) for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has just reached a significant milestone in their Ohio Regional Traumatic Brain injury Model System (ORTBIMS) research. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation project team awarded grant to use commercially-available gaming technology to deliver motor rehabilitation

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at OSUMC was recently awarded $653,014 from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to use commercially-available gaming technology to deliver motor rehabilitation. This project will enable a “gold standard” motor rehabilitation intervention, constraint-induced movement therapy (CI therapy), to be implemented in patient's homes at low cost. In doing so, a markedly underserved population of patients with chronic hemiparesis resulting from stroke will now have access to an intervention that was previously only available to a select few.
